Visit little known Little Mountain in Los Angeles

The rolling hills of East Los Angeles possess many hidden gems. One of them is Montecito Heights Open Space. It’s a bit off the beaten path, and the trails are not super well-maintained; however, with a good pair of hiking shoes to maintain traction in loose dirt, you can conquer any of the steep inclines and meandering trails within the park colloquially known as “Flat Top.” All with the added benefit of avoiding crowds.

The best part of Montecito Heights Open Space? The vistas it offers. For a picturesque LA sunset, arrive in the late afternoon to witness the rugged landscape transform into a brilliant orange under the golden hues of the setting sun, set against a purple backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountain Range, which spreads east into a deepening indigo.

Beyond the surrounding urban sprawl, you can see the small dome of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign to the west. This “little mountain” delivers big beauty!

Take the 110 to Exit 27 for Ave. 43. There are various entrances to the park, the easiest of which is at the top of Montecito Dr. right next to a radio station. Park along the street and enjoy! Dog-friendly!
