Weekend Sherpa started in 2006 with a simple question: Where should we go outdoors this weekend?

Co-founders Brad Day and Holly Kulak created Weekend Sherpa to answer it—by finding great hikes, bike rides, beaches, road trips, paddles, places to eat and drink, and other adventures worth getting off the couch for.

Twenty years later, Weekend Sherpa is still independently owned and intentionally small. We research the places, do the hikes, take the photos, and write the stories—sharing firsthand recommendations for Northern and Southern California, and beyond.

Meet the Founders

  • Brad Day

    Co-Founder & Publisher

    Brad co-founded Weekend Sherpa in 2006 from his San Francisco apartment, when the first email went out to about 100 people and growing the audience meant handing out signup flyers at Crissy Field. Twenty years later, he’s still passionate about the same mission: inspiring people to explore the world around them through great stories, photography, video, and destination partnerships. Brad loves planning trips big and small, especially when hiking or biking is the best way to experience a place. When he’s not working on Weekend Sherpa, Brad can often be found on his bike, competing in gravel and mountain bike races. He also tends to take too many photos and put nearly as much thought into the post-adventure beer as the adventure itself.

  • Holy Kulak

    Co-Founder & Editorial Director

    Holly co-founded Weekend Sherpa in 2006, back when business plans were sketched on paper and company Christmas parties involved hauling a tree across San Francisco. She shapes its editorial voice and writes many of the publication's feature stories and special editions, with a soft spot for the unexpected detours, local characters, and chance encounters that make a place memorable. A runner, reader, and collector of friendships around the world, Holly is equally happy exploring somewhere new or staying put with a good novel, a glass of wine, and a roaring fire. In another life, she'd run a tiny bookshop. In this one, her world mostly revolves around Gus the bulldog.

    Matt is a hiker, skier and adventure seeker who grew up exploring California. He writes about outdoor getaways, from peak-bagging adventures to laid-back weekends by the water, with an emphasis on helping others experience the best of the Golden State.
