Tree Town

Take an Urban Tree Walk Through South Pasadena

Home to an estimated 21,000 trees and 100 acres of parkland, South Pasadena has earned its nickname: the City of Trees. This 2.5-mile neighborhood walk lets you experience its leafy canopy up close, winding through charming streets and three of the city’s beloved parks.

Start at the historic South Pasadena Public Library, surrounded by Library Park, a lovely green space brimming with more than 75 trees and 21 different species. Here you’ll find the city’s most famous tree: a Moreton Bay fig known as the Library Tree. Planted in 1930 and designated a historic landmark, this majestic giant envelops you with gnarled roots and sprawling branches.

Next, make your way to Eddie Park, taking in the well-preserved, turn-of-the-century homes and towering greenery along the route. This pocket-sized park is shaded by mature sycamores and oaks, but its standout feature is the stately Eddie House, a fine example of Transitional Craftsman architecture.

Continue on to Garfield Park, where a circular path loops around a wide grassy knoll—perfect for a little tree gazing. Find a shady spot (there are plenty) and linger awhile beneath the canopy before heading back.

Bonus ice cream: Stop by Fair Oaks Pharmacy, a local landmark dating back to 1915. A classic Route 66 stop, this working pharmacy features a retro soda fountain with counter seating and a menu of old-fashioned sundaes, malts, and shakes.

Getting There:

Start: South Pasadena Public Library, 1100 Oxley St., South Pasadena. Street parking is available on El Centro Street, Diamond Avenue, Fairview Avenue, and Oxley Street.

From the library, head west on Oxley Street. Turn right on Raymond Avenue, left on Monterey Road, right on Milan Avenue, then left on Edgewood Drive. Eddie Park will be on your right.

From Eddie Park, head north on Chelten Way. Turn left on Monterey Road, then right on Stafford Avenue. Garfield Park is across the street on Mission Street.

From Garfield Park, head west on Mission Street, passing Fair Oaks Pharmacy. Turn left on Fremont Avenue, then right on El Centro Avenue to return to the library.
