Start at the lower parking lot for Dragon Mountain Thiên Long Sơn Park, marked by the colorful Vietnamese fishing boat. Walk up the driveway and through the main gate, then up the aptly named “Stairway to Heaven” (a sign points the way).

The stairs climb about 250 feet of elevation before reaching a viewing platform. (There are plenty of benches for resting along the way.) Savor the view of rolling green hills, with Silicon Valley in the distance.

Turn right to explore the religious art and magnificent gardens. Christian and Buddhist symbols mix freely here, with Buddhas and crosses sharing space. The gardens surround several public buildings, including a library and meditation room.

On the western side of the temple area, climb the staircase.

Pass the viewing platforms, then turn right as the path heads into the hills. After passing God Hall, take a breather at the hilltop picnic area, shaded by gnarled oak trees.

From here, it’s a steep, half-hour push to the top on a lush, grassy trail. As hikers near the summit, they’ll notice a multitude of Buddhist statues alongside a large cross. Catch your breath amid the art, then climb onto the nearby pile of boulders — the summit of Dragon Mountain!

Views stretch across the valley, with Loma Prieta and Mount Umunhum clearly visible. Enjoy a well-earned break on the benches, then retrace your route back to the parking lot.

Dragon Mountain Thiên Long Sơn Park is located at 3215 Calaveras Road in Milpitas. Map. Open from sunrise to sunset. No dogs.
