Can We Get a Whoop Whoop!
Hike the Whoop-de-Doos Trail in Los Angeles
City, mountain, and ocean views all in one hike? Whoop whoop! It’s no surprise the the Kenter Fire Road and Whoop-de-Doos Trail (a combo of fire road and singletrack) is a favorite among local mountain bikers and hikers alike. Tucked into a quiet Brentwood neighborhood, this roughly 3-mile lollipop loop delivers sweeping scenery, seasonal wildflowers, and an enchanting tree swing along the way.
Start on N. Kenter Ave., where a paved fire road lined with showy fountain grass climbs past a transmission tower. Almost immediately, views open toward Santa Monica and its shimmering blue bay.
About a third of a mile in—just before a T-junction—look for the unmarked Whoop-de-Doos singletrack on the left. The narrow dirt trail winds along the canyon’s edge (in spring you'll see bright orange deerweed and delicate white morning glories), revealing beautiful views of the rolling hills of Mandeville Canyon.
Eventually the trail reconnects with the fire road. Head right, then quickly join the unmarked Lower Canyonback Trail on the right. The short climb is steep, but the reward is huge: panoramic views of the city skyline, mountains, and ocean all at once.
In the open landscape stands a sprawling coast live oak with two swings hanging from its branches—an unexpected place to pause on this mostly shadeless hike, sway, and take in the view.
Continue downhill to the T-intersection and retrace the fire road back to your car.
