Hike Circle Mountain Trail Near Wrightwood

The 2.9-mile (round-trip) Circle Mountain Trail near Wrightwood may seem short, but this out-and-back trail packs a punch. A heads-up: This hike is very steep and poses some navigational challenges. As you leave the parking area and begin making your way along the dirt road that functions as the trail, Circle Mountain stands ahead of you.

After an easy start to the trail, things get tough, climbing 944 feet in elevation (which means it feels about as steep as climbing a staircase) with loose dirt (hiking poles are useful on this trail to help with balance). The key here is to take your time … take breaks to enjoy the stunning views and shake out your legs if they start getting tired!

The good news is the higher you climb, the more expansive the views become, looking out to the high desert, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the town of Wrightwood nestled into the mountainside below. The trail skirts the border of the Bridge Fire closure area and while this trail was untouched by the fire itself, it suffered some damage from fire crews working to keep the area safe when fires impacted it (you’ll see some of that impact in the surrounding areas).

NOTE: Weaving around the fire breaks makes this trail slightly less straightforward than it used to be, so having a trail map downloaded ahead of time is smart. But the general idea is to just stay on the main road and head upwards! At the top, the trail continues for a short while and you’ll come to a bench: a perfect place to rest after the steep climb and enjoy the well-earned views.

Head back the way you came. Just remember, going down steep sections is harder than going up, so go slow and watch your step. Zig-zagging along the fire breaks also helps make the descent easier, as does utilizing the soft dirt instead of packed dirt. While there is no danger of falling off the mountain, slipping is never fun, especially when holiday fun in Wrightwood is waiting for you!

HOLIDAY BONUS: After the hike, head into Wrightwood to enjoy their holiday offerings! Lots of restaurants and stores to choose from, including the famous Christmas Shop in Applewood Court (1309 Evergreen Rd.) . Grab a beer and some food at Wrightwood Brew Co., buy Christmas ornaments and décor at the Christmas Shop, get some fudge or hot cocoa … you’ve earned it!

NOTE: This trail can get snow. Circle Mountain is located near Wrightwood. Adventure Pass required. Parking is across the road from the trailhead in the big turnout. Dogs allowed, but not recommended for this hike.
