This spring some of Mendocino County’s secret spots look like rainbows, thanks to the vibrant flowers popping up all over. Add some water to your next wildflower hike at Lake Mendocino, a full oasis surrounded by trails decked in colorful flora.

Take the moderate 6-mile (round-trip) Shakota Trail on the west side for premium bloom spotting: Mariposa lilies blanket one particular meadow in May, and bald eagle sightings are a bonus. Combine wildflowers and wild views at Low Gap Park, where a 4-mile loop hike dazzles with monkey-flowers, larkspur, mission bells, hound’s tongue, and Ithuriel’s spear, along with a brilliant panorama of Ukiah Valley!
