Zoom Up Zuma

Hike the Zuma Ridge Trail in Malibu

Some hikes just rise above the rest. The Zuma Ridge Trail is a 5.2-mile out-and-back hike that begins in a posh Malibu neighborhood before climbing to a stunning ridgeline with sweeping mountain and ocean views.

Start this uplifting trek by passing through the metal gate at the trailhead. Almost immediately, the wide dirt trail begins a gradual ascent. While the climb is steady, it’s never overly steep, making for a manageable uphill through fragrant sagebrush and chaparral-covered hillsides.

Expansive canyon and coastline views provide plenty of gorgeous distraction, and you’ll likely share the trail with fellow hikers, mountain bikers, and even the occasional horseback rider.

Around 2.6 miles in, after gaining roughly 1,469 feet in elevation, you’ll reach the scenic ridgeline overlook. From this lofty vantage point, take in breathtaking views of lush Zuma and Trancas canyons, with the Channel Islands shimmering offshore.

While the trail continues deeper into the mountains, the ridgeline makes a perfect turnaround point. Head back the way you came and enjoy the gentle downhill return. What goes up must come down.

The Zuma Ridge Trail trailhead is located at 5920 Busch Drive in Malibu. There is a small parking lot at the trailhead. Expect little to no shade along the route, so consider hiking early in the morning or later in the evening on hot days. Bring sun protection and plenty of water. Dog-friendly.
