Hiking to Inspiration Point in Los Angeles
With a name like Inspiration Point, expectations are high … and high you’ll go, as in above the clouds on this beautiful 10-mile (round-trip) hike located 2 miles north of popular Echo Mountain. While the Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mountain is well paved and snakes its way up the mountain for a short but satisfying hike, Inspiration Point is more challenging with its narrow, gravelly path and moderate incline. Nestled in the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains, the mountain offers views overlooking Pasadena as you circle your way to the top. The immediate surroundings are lush, green, and a bit wild.
After 5 miles you’ll reach an observation deck with a gazebo, telescopes, benches, and a truly breathtaking view! Take in the forested San Gabriel Mountains and an expansive swath of L.A. Originally intended as a lookout point for guests of the popular White City resort on Echo Mountain over a century ago, telescopes now point to the various parts of Los Angeles. On a clear day you can see all the way out to Catalina Island. Inspiration indeed!
From I-210 take the Lake Ave. exit north into Altadena and follow Lake all the way to the top of the hill, following the curve past Cobb Estate. Street parking is available but read the signs. Enter Cobb Estate and follow the sign for Echo Mountain (about 2.5 miles). Once you reach Echo Mountain, follow the sign for Inspiration Point and take the little inlet leading to a narrow path all the way to the observation deck (about 2.5 miles). Allow about 5 hours for this hike. Dog-friendly!
