The Great Lake

Lake Shasta

Whether you want to picnic, enjoy a sunset, or take to the waters on a rowboat, kayak, or pontoon, you can find relaxing shoreline, hidden waterfalls, secluded coves, and amenities like marinas and restaurants. Golden Oldie

Shasta State Historic Park

Shasta State Historic Park

Located 10 minutes from Redding is an intriguing throwback to a thriving time during the California gold rush. Shasta State Historic Park features the ruins of a past time when one of the state’s most prolific mining districts was alive with all the requisites for the people who came here in search of riches and opportunity.

Explore the remnants of cottages, cemeteries, abandoned buildings, and other sites that have been restored to their heyday appearance, including the County Courthouse with historic artwork inside; the jail—filled with original items; and the Blumb Bakery, where you can see how baking back in the day was done in brick ovens.

Take a walk on one of the history trails, passing among ruins and gardens. Old oaks adorn parts of the trail and an original stagecoach in the Pioneer Barn section.

Dam Good View!

Shasta Dam and Lake Shasta

Shasta Dam

Shasta Dam is surrounded by bike trails, picnic areas, and absolutely beautiful views. The dam forms California’s biggest reservoir, and during the Second World War it was a vital source of electricity to statewide factories. While guided tours aren’t currently offered (check for updates), you can do a self-guided tour across the dam. Its history is impressive, as is the construction and architecture.

At the very least, visit for the views! Get a brilliant view of gigantic Mount Shasta set amid the impressive Klamath and Cascade mountain ranges.
