Small Town, Big Appeal

Wine taste in Elkton along the Umpqua River Scenic Byway in Southern Oregon

Two women wine tasting in Elkton, Oregon at Rivers Edge Winery

Overlooking the Umpqua River and tucked in among coastal mountains, Elkton may be small, but it’s big on charm, history, and wine (it’s one of the newest AVAs in Oregon). Choose from one of three restaurants in town and one of four wine tasting rooms. River’s Edge Winery has a wide range of pinots and a delicious sparkling wine.

Wine flight at Brandborg Wines in Elkton, Oregon

Mike Landt, who started the winery with his wife, Vonnie, is happy to talk about the cool-climate grapes that do best here (hint: there’s more than just pinots, though the region is lauded for this varietal). Nearby Brandborg Wines landed in Elkton after Sue and Terry Brandborg moved their home wine-making success from the San Francisco Bay Area to the beautiful Umpqua Valley. Their tasting room in downtown Elkton has a nice outdoor patio with a fireplace.

Getting to Elkton is an easy drive from the dunes on the Southern Coast: you’ll travel on the Umpqua River Scenic Byway (Highway 38) through lush valleys, green hills, and the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area (3 miles east of Reedsport). After wine tasting and lunch in Elkton, make a splash beyond the wine tasting … the Highway of Waterfalls awaits…
