Adventure After Hours
Redding Evening Adventures
Located just three hours northeast of San Francisco, Redding is cradled by Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen, with the Sacramento River running right through the city. And a little-known secret: Redding keeps the outdoor adventures going throughout summer nights! Here are the top 5 ways to adventure at night in Redding.
Night Hikes to Sunrise at Lassen Peak: A moonlit hike into an active volcano: do it! Lassen Peak is the largest of a group of more than 30 volcanic domes in Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the 2.5-mile trail to the summit offers vistas that are totally surreal at night. Time it right and you'll watch the sunrise from the peak.
Moonlight Kayak Tours at Whiskeytown: Time magazine called Redding the Unofficial Capital of Kayaking. In summer, moonlight kayak tours are led by rangers at beautiful Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, home to one of the few full lakes in California.
Full Moon Vantage at Black Butte: During a full moon, join one of the organized 5-mile (round-trip) hikes at Black Butte, a multi-peaked cluster of lava plug domes that tops out at 6,325 feet. The treeless climb on volcanic trail is thrilling, and the moon-glow on adjacent Mount Shasta is otherworldly.
Lassen Dark Sky Festival, August 7–9: Far from the light pollution of civilization, Lassen National Park is one of the last sanctuaries of natural darkness. Celebrate all that is out of this world with constellation tours, guided hikes, solar scope viewing and demos by stellar organizations like NASA.
Choose Your Own Redding Adventure: Redding, known as Shasta Cascade's hub city, offers fabulous dining, a year-round roster of events, and a variety of lodging for visitors. Discover other adventures, attractions, and additional information about the many things to do in Redding and Shasta Cascade both day and night.
