Labyrinth Hike at Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve in the East Bay

Labyrinth Hike at Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve in the East Bay

A 10-million-year-old volcano and a couple of labyrinths are part of this 2.2-mile hike in the Oakland Hills at Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. Start on a paved path that ascends to Round Top, the park’s dormant volcano. Take your first right to remain on the paved trail and connect to Round Top Loop Trail.

Hike through mixed forest before emerging to a grass-covered ridgeline and the Quarry Pit overlook, where you’ll turn right and follow the signs to the Mazzariello Labyrinth (the labyrinth was illegally built on public lands in 1989 but was kept as part of the park).

When you’re ready, head back up to the overlook and continue onto the Quarry Trail, following it until the Quarry Trail Bench. Walk about 50 feet past the bench and find a small footpath to your right. It goes to a hidden labyrinth amid the surrounding overhead cliffs. You’re likely to have it to yourself.

The hike begins at the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve’s parking lot off Skyline Blvd. After you visit the second, hidden, labyrinth, take the Quarry Trail back to the previous junction and then take the Round Top Loop Trail on your right. This will complete your trip around Round Top. Dog-friendly!
