Pomo Pitch
Hike-in Camping at Pomo Canyon on Sonoma Coast
Secluded camping under the redwoods and by a creek … now that’s a good pitch! Get to it at Pomo Canyon Environmental Campground, an absolute gem within Sonoma Coast State Park. This walk-in-only campground has hillside options and spots closer to the creek.
Campers seeking extra quiet space should hike in to campsite 13, the only one with a private pathway up the ridge. Creekside preference? Grab site 14 or cross the wooden bridge to sites 17–19. There are 21 sites in total, though sites 11 and 12 are currently closed.
Relax in the company of redwoods or head out for a 6-mile (round-trip) hike on Pomo Canyon Trail to Shell Beach on the coast. The trail starts near the parking lot and passes campsites 1–5. Make your way up and through the forest, emerging to coastal grasslands. Soak in the marvelous views of the Russian River and the Pacific.
BONUS: For a first-come, first-served campground nearby, Willow Creek Environmental Campground is a lovely spot with sites right by the Russian River. There's 11 spots in total, but no running water so you need to bring your own. Cash fee. No dogs.
To access Pomo Canyon Environmental Campground from the south, turn right off Hwy. 1 onto Willow Creek Rd. Follow Willow Creek Rd. to the right, continue past the farmhouse (also on your right) and take the next right, which will end in a parking lot. The sites are first-come, first-served, and a cash fee is required for overnight camping, which is payable at the parking lot in the self-service station. Pit toilets are available. There is no running water; bring your own. No dogs.
