Redding’s magnificent Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is 42,000 acres of wilderness park, and one of the only pet-friendly locations in the National Parks system. Hike to the tallest waterfall in the park—the impressive three-tiered, 220-foot Whiskeytown Falls. Relax lakeside or play along the shores of the expansive lake. Redding’s 17-mile (one-way) Sacramento River National Recreation Trail is famous as one of the country’s premier rail trails. It’s car-free, and dog-friendly! Whether you walk it, run it, or pedal it, the trail begins at the architecturally stunning Sundial Bridge and follows the river upstream—all the way to Shasta Dam. Go as long or as far as you’d like … beautiful bridges and waterside bench stops can be found along sections of the route. Bonus Gardens: If your dog just loves to stop and smell the flowers, McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is located on the north side of the Sundial Bridge, showcasing more than 200 acres of trees and plants. A 1-mile walking trail loops around the Arboretum and links to the Sacramento River Trail.

Just 20 minutes from Redding, Shasta Lake brings plenty of options for whatever sparks your enthusiasm and gets tails wagging. Picnic here, watch a sunset, lounge on the shoreline, or take to the water on a rowboat. The relaxation is endless at this mountain-surrounded oasis with hidden waterfalls and secluded coves.
