Redding’s 17-mile (one-way) Sacramento River National Recreation Trail is famous as one of the country’s premier rail trails. It’s car-free, and dog-friendly! Whether you walk it, run it, or pedal it, the trail begins at the architecturally stunning Sundial Bridge and follows the river upstream —all the way to Shasta Dam. Go as long or as far as you’d like … beautiful bridges and waterside bench stops can be found along sections of the route. Bonus Gardens: If your dog just loves to stop and smell the flowers, McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is located on the north side of the Sundial Bridge, showcasing more than 200 acres of trees and plants. A 1-mile walking trail loops around the Arboretum and links to the Sacramento River Trail.
