Sublime Suisun

Catch a Sunset at Suisun Marsh

It's the largest tidal marsh on the entire west coast. The Suisun Marsh in Solano County is often overlooked in favor of the Bay Area’s other impressive landscapes, but this diverse and unique area is well worth a visit. The patchwork of tidal wetlands, marshes, and sloughs is a throwback to California's early days. One of the best places to take in this impressive landscape is Rush Ranch. In the winter months it's a prime spot for spotting all kinds of bird life (chances are good you'll be escorted in by a great egret). Take a walk on the Marsh Trail (see upcoming closure dates below) and get up close to the Suisun Slough. For sunset, walk half a mile up the Suisun Hill Trail to a bench overlooking the vast marsh and rolling hills currently fringed by fall foliage. Old barns and windmills serve as a reminder of this area's ranching heritage. Mount Diablo looms to the south, and to the north the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains flank Napa Valley.

The Marsh and South Pasture Trails will be closed the following weekends: Dec. 4-6, Dec. 11-13, Jan. 8-10, Jan. 22-24, Feb. 5-7, and Feb. 26-28. No dogs are allowed on the Marsh and South Pasture Trails. The Suisun Hill Trail will remain open and is dog-friendly.
