Brewery Gulch Inn Mendocino

Getting a little coastal R&R means several good things when you stay at Mendocino's Brewery Gulch Inn. Reclaimed redwoods, for starters. That's the material that was used to construct this rustically elegant and intimate inn tucked in the woods just beyond Highway 1. The modern, elegant lobby has a 35-foot cathedral ceiling and a common room that opens to a patio and a Pacific vista (on cold days, the large glass-and-steel-plate fireplace is a welcoming centerpiece).

The 10-room inn (plus one suite) is ideal for those seeking privacy, quietude, and good food! Included with your stay: a "happy hour" featuring first-class wines from Anderson Valley and delicious fresh food by the talented chef Peg Davis. Breakfast is also part of the experience, with seasonal features and popular favorites like the Big Classic with organic eggs. Rooms have ocean views. The property is not far from the village of Mendocino and its marquee Mendocino Headlands State Park, where trails from  leave right from town and curve along the dramatic coastal bluffs and outcroppings with unforgettable views. Catch a sunset here, and afterwards grab a scoop of Mendocino's signature candy-cap-mushroom–flavored ice cream from Frankie's. Sweet dreams!

TIP: En route to Mendocino, stop at Lula Cellars (2800 Guntley Road, Philo), on the far west end of Anderson Valley. Jeff is the down-to-earth and delightful wine maker here—and he's good at his craft! The 2014 rosé will please even those who are picky with pinks, and the 2012 pinot noir is smooth enough to pair with anything.

Brewery Gulch Inn is at 9401 N. Hwy. 1, Mendocino. (707) 937-4752. No dogs at the inn. Mendocino Headlands State Park is dog-friendly! Lula Cellars is dog-friendly!
