The Magic of MacKerricher
Boardwalks, biking, tidepooling, camping, and beach beauty at MacKerricher State Park in Mendocino

Headlands, wetlands, lakefront, and tide pools—MacKerricher State Park is one of Mendocino County’s coastal greatest hits. This wild stretch just north of Fort Bragg packs in miles of dramatic shoreline, an easy boardwalk ramble, and one of the best chances around to spot river otters slipping through a thriving estuary.

Start at the main parking area, where you’ll find picnic tables perched above a striking (and sensitive) landscape of dunes, bluffs, and beach. From there, head west to the oceanfront Laguna Point Trail, a 0.6-mile boardwalk loop with sweeping views from Fort Bragg to the Lost Coast. Five interpretive platforms offer prime vantage points, and a stairway to a beach cove provides access to tide pools.

Want to cover more ground? Pedal the Old Haul Road, a 3-mile one-way multiuse path stretching from Ward Avenue in Cleone to Pudding Creek Trestle in Fort Bragg. For a slightly shorter spin, pick up the trail at the edge of Surfwood Campground and cruise south through fragile dune habitat and blufftop scenery.
Camping Bonus: MacKerricher has four campgrounds (reserve ahead).
Accessibility: MacKerricher has wheelchair accessible campsites, and a wheelchair rental service for beach use. The boardwalks and Old Haul Road are also accessible.
Visitor Center Tip: The tiny visitor center here exudes charm, with artisan souvenirs and friendly staff on-site.
