Rio Del Mar-velous

Beach hopping walk at Rio Del Mar State Beach in Aptos

Rio Del Mar State Beach in Aptos might be one of the best places for a treasure hunt. Its location between two other beaches makes for a good stroll featuring a spectacle of wildlife as you search the sand for sea glass and seashells.

Park at Rio Del Mar and walk north for about half a mile to Seacliff State Beach to see the SS Palo Alto, known by locals as “the Cement Ship.” The vessel sits offshore in shallow waters after the January 2023 storms washed out the pier. Seacliff is popular with swimmers and is known for its beachcombing opportunities.

Next, head south for about 1 mile to Beer Can Beach. If you’re at this beach during low tide, you’ll likely spy sea glass, fossils, and shells. Rio Del Mar beach typically has the most sea glass, though Beer Can Beach has some; but it is most abundant during the winter season.

Sandpipers chase waves up and down the beach, and other wildlife, like seals, sea lions, and otters, can appear, as can whales, and even great white sharks.

If you’re at Rio Del Mar late day, grab dinner at Venus Spirits Cocktails and Kitchen (reservations recommended). This is Sean Venus’s second restaurant, and the food is excellent. Time your meal right and if the fog hasn’t rolled in just yet (okay, even if it has) Venus is a gorgeous spot for sunset. Tip: adjacent Venus Pie Trap is also worth the visit.

There are two parking lots for Rio Del Mar State BeachThis one on Esplanade is free and right in front of Venus Pie Trap and Venus restaurant. There is also another lot at the very south end of Rio Del Mar Beach on Beach Drive with limited free and paid parking. Rio Del Mar Beach is dog-friendly (must be leashed).
