Hi-Yo, Silver Lake!

A Workout Hike Around Silver Lake Reservoir

The 2.25-mile loop around Silver Lake Reservoir is a classic LA workout walk-jog-hike, and now it’s better than ever! First, the long-empty reservoir got refilled last year. Then, just a couple of months ago, a section across the South Dam reopened—now with an unobstructed view of the lovely body of water.

With street parking all around, you could start your workout anywhere. But we suggest leaving your car near the Silver Lake Meadow, a designated “quiet” lawn. Start your stroll heading south on the dirt path, passing under dense palms and by brittlebush flowers as you reach the dog park. Turn right onto the pristine paved path at the south end of the water—this is the beautiful new section, where you can snap pics of the resident ducks and enjoy a vista framed by the Verdugos and San Gabriels.

At just past the 1.5-mile mark, you’ll reach the north end of adjacent Ivanhoe Reservoir. Turn right, where a gentle ascent leads to a charming natural rest area. Veer right again at the nursery school and tack on the up-and-down finale on your way to the Silver Lake Meadow (dogs not allowed here). You’ll find a native plant garden—currently home to poppy blooms—and expansive green space, prime for yoga or just a good old-fashioned lie-down on the grass. We recommend kicking off your shoes (it’s a bare-feet-encouraged zone) and enjoying a peaceful picnic, and perhaps the splendor of a spring sunset.

Take CA-2 to Glendale Blvd. North and turn right on Glendale Blvd. Turn left at Earl St., followed by an immediate right onto Silver Lake Blvd., where you should look for street parking. Except for the meadow, the loop is dog-friendly!
